Indigenous Youth - issues in Alice Springs 2024

This issue is complex, and not one that is easily solved, and students also need to be mindful to consider all aspects of a problem before forming an opinion about this issue. Cultural perspectives need to be considered. People need to withhold judgement about a situation they have not personally experienced.

There are several possible issues to consider:

  • Youth boredom and lack of engagement in appropriate activities after hours
  • Feeling unsafe in their homes due to domestic violence or family conflict
  • Substance abuse, anger, frustration
  • Lower educational attainment, truancy, non-attendance at school
  • Poor living conditions, overcrowding, damaged premises
  • Lack of skills and strategies in dealing with overwhelming feelings
  • Poverty, lack of parental supervision and structured family life.
  • Intergenerational poor levels of educational attainment.
  • Fewer job opportunities
  • Youth detention and incarceration - hard to break out of cycles without support
