Designing a Survey

The data you collect in a spreadsheet should be as accessible and graphable as possible. Try to imagine what the respondents will say or do when you design a question. Here are basic things to consider:

  • Freshness and variety
  • Grouping of questions into themes
  • Only ask what you want to know
  • Boredom and attention span of respondents
  • Choices and opinions
  • Limit text responses (unable to graph these)
  • Clarity of language in questions including spelling, grammar, tone
  • Choosing ideal question type
  • Ask peers to review for you before distribution
